We’re more connected, more digital and more flooded with data than ever. So why is interoperability still a problem in our healthcare systems? That’s the question the founders of the 17 startups below are asking, in hopes of improving patient health outcomes, streamlining services and payments, and empowering individuals with greater access to their own medical records.

They have plenty of momentum behind them. In 2016, congress passed the 21st Century Cures Act, drafted to promote innovation and testing of new solutions to promote health data sharing. Last year, the US Department of Health and Human Services introduced new rules to improve data exchange; among other things, the rules indicate that electronic health information should be available to patients at no cost.

But while the Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) used by most hospitals and care providers should make it easy to manage and share data, these systems can be cumbersome to use, requiring doctors to spend hours each day behind their computer screens instead of face-to-face with patients. And believe it or not, most medical data sharing still happens via fax machine. As a result, information is siloed in networks and devices, communication is sluggish and patients too seldom receive the timely care they deserve.

These founders from the StartUp Health portfolio are moving beyond the limitations of our outdated health systems and connecting patients, care providers, insurers, researchers and innovators with the valuable information they need. WIth their help, interoperability in healthcare is no longer out of reach.
